FDC still strong — Besigye

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Dr. Kizza Besigye has assured his members that the party will not collapse after his retirement.

Besigye was speaking at the launch of Maj. John Kazoora’s book titled Betrayed By My Leader at Kampala Club.

Besigye said FDC will continue to be stronger and focused on fighting injustice and economic imbalances in the country.

“People shouldn’t be worried that FDC is going to collapse because there is a contest for leadership. The only challenge we are facing now is how to manage the contest and how to respect each other,” he explained.

Besigye is leaving the party presidency after three unsuccessful runs for the presidency of Uganda.

Three party members were nominated last week to contest for the top post. They were Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, Tororo County MP Geoffrey Ekanya and the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Nathan Nandala Mafabi.

The elections are slated for November during the party’s national delegates conference.

Besigye, who has been party president since 2005, said they fought for peace and democracy to create a comfortable environment for people with divergent views.

“We fought for peace so that people could oppose us and be respected in their opposition,” he said.

Kazoora noted that his book is aimed at shaping the destiny of the future generation.

“The book educates those in leadership that it is not good to betray others. It encourages them to be frank,” he said.

The 241-page book, which costs sh30,000, highlights the events that took place during the liberation struggle and after NRA took over power in 1986.

The author also explains why he fell out with President Yoweri Museveni.
