The cause of the fire had not been established and efforts to get comments from police spokespersons were futile as they were unreachable.
The fire which started at about 8:00pm was eventually contained by fire brigade team, but eye witness said a lot of damage had already been done.
The most affected part was the Bata shop which was totally razed in the blaze. The building also houses Centenary Bank branch offices and other private shops.
Some eye witnesses at the scene said the fire could have started from the Capital shoppers stores, but Capital shoppers appear not have been affected at all.
Others eyes witnesses suspect the fire could have been triggered by short circuit.
